Ac-i-prim® Lactobacillus acidophilus

Dietary supplement with probiotic lactic acid bacteria (lactobacilli) for all ornamental birds, flying pigeons, quails and pheasants.

Ac-i-prim® with Lactobacillus acidophilus is the successor to the legendary PT-12.

The European Authority has classified this relevant lactobacillus (“lactobacillus acidophilus”) as a “zootechnical additive” in the functional group “intestine stabiliser” in accordance with its approval based on extensive science-based studies.

The effect of this “lactobacillus acidophilus” is quite vast:

  • a) it aids in developing a stable, less pathogenic intestinal flora as early as after hatching. Meaning: it counteracts coliform bacteria, clostridia and fungi particularly.
  • b) improved fermentation of carbohydrates and the production of lactic acid stimulates digestion. The additional lactic acid produced adds to energy metabolism. More energy also means a vitality boost.
  • c) improved food metabolization of course also affects quantitative egg formation, and particularly the qualitative egg shell stability.

So Ac-i-prim® with “lactobacillus acidophilus” contains what’s needed to support the health of the above species of poultry. And so the fundamental idea behind using a probiotic lactobacillus (or a probiotic lactic acid bacterium) is to reduce the need for antibiotics. This particularly makes sense, as the number of antibiotic substances developing resistance keeps increasing and poses a big long-term problem in the poultry sector.

Over 15 years of experience with lactobacilli in the pharmaceutical sector has resulted in my unfailing knowledge base. Re-scha® applied this knowledge to the entire production process of the Ac-i-prim® product. The quality standards of re-scha® and its customers are reflected in this animal supplement Ac-i-prim® with live lactic acid bacteria (or: lactobacilli). The main focus is on complying with the declared count of live lactobacilli (i.e. lactic acid bacteria). A very high concentration of lactobacilli in the Ac-i-prim® product is of course the prerequisite for the targeted effect of this product. The laboratory of the production company (i.e. culture company) of the “lactobacillus acidophilus” monitors all production steps: starting with cultivating the “lactobacillus acidophilus” all the way to the final stage of mixing the Ac-i-prim® product. Nothing is left to chance. Of course the Ac-i-prim® product comes in a package which allows proper storage. Re-scha® spared no cost or efforts in this respect.

This specific “lactobacillus acidophilus” was not chosen by chance.

Ac-i-prim® only contains one lactic acid bacteria strain. As the saying goes, “too many cooks spoil the broth”, different species of bacteria can hinder their effectiveness. It’s extremely difficult to find different species of bacteria for an animal supplement which work well together. Furthermore, “lactobacillus acidophilus” doesn’t come in capsules. What’s the point for users or the animal, if the capsule shell doesn’t open until past the intestinal passage? The risk is too great. In addition, the product would lose a number of valuable live germs inside the capsule.

This aforementioned “lactobacillus acidophilus” is a special isolate from a species frequently found in the small intestines of the specific animal species. Among other things it’s also able to populate exposed intestinal receptors. Occupying receptors in the small intestines in turn means less room for disease-causing bacteria in the intestines.

“Lactobacillus acidophilus” shows no resistance to antibiotics, so Ac-i-prim® always needs to be used again after antibiotics are used. Lactobacilli resistant to antibiotics are not approved in the EU.

Another focus in producing Ac-i-prim® is the use of high-quality additional components. The excipient used for the lactic acid bacteria is cornflour. This creates a very dry medium. This is one of the basic requirements for long storage stability. Adding chicory powder with the ingredient inulin significantly accelerates the start and growth of lactic acid bacteria (or lactobacilli) in the small intestines of the target animal species. Just a hint: Inulin is a prebiotic and a substance which serves as a food source for beneficial bacteria (particularly lactic acid bacteria). So chicory powder is extremely important for lactic acid bacteria settling in the small intestines of animal.

Using Ac-i-prim® for the various target animal species:

1.) Ornamental birds:

For first-time application, Ac-i-prim® should be given for at least 14 days (or even better over 3 weeks). After this, use as desired: e.g. four times a month, or even twice a week. To aid in treating macrorhabdiosis, an disease caused by megabacteria, give Ac-i-prim® for at least 4 – 6 weeks in addition to antimycotic medication. And nothing speaks against giving the Ac-i-prim® product all year long. For foreseeable stress situations (due to switching food, transport, shows, etc.) it’s advisable to give Ac-i-prim® 2 – 3 times a week to prevent dysbioses, starting one week prior to the event. For hand raising parrots, mix Ac-i-prim® into the hand raising food. During the parrot babies’ first week of life, spread max. ½ microscoop of Ac-i-prim® over at least 3 meals per day or mix into the wet mash cooled to body temperature. From the 2nd week of life, stir ½ micro scoop of Ac-i-prim® into the wet mash once a day.  In this case, it is sensible to start adding the product starting the hatchling’s second day of life at the latest, and from there on for at least 3 – 4 weeks. For natural breeding (parents feeding), Ac-i-prim® is added to the parents’ food.

2.) Flying pigeons:

For first-time application, Ac-i-prim® should be given for at least 14 days. It’s important not to wait until just prior to the “journey” to start giving it for the first time, but should be given at least 2 – 3 months beforehand, and then 1 – 2 times a week. The rule of thumb for breeding: Use Ac-i-prim® from the 1st day of life through the parents’ food for at least 7 days. After being weaned, young pigeons are again given Ac-i-prim® for approx. 5 days, then regularly or sporadically for 1 – 2 days. Travel season is a special challenge for adult and young pigeons, and is particularly challenging for flying pigeon breeders. To tap in to the full potential of the “lactobacillus salivarius”, Ac-i-prim® should be used in this field according to the re-scha travel plan (also see flyer or online at www.re-scha.de). During young animal travel, young pigeons are particularly prone to bacterial and viral infections due to the so-called “young pigeon disease”. To support vitality, Ac-i-prim® may therefore be helpful throughout the “young animal travel” for 5 days a week. Trichomonads and coccidia are a major health problem for carrier pigeons. As we know: Trichomonads and coccidia are “only” secondary pathogens. Meaning: if the intestinal flora is unbalanced it is particularly easy for these pathogens to multiply. A stable intestinal flora with lots of good bacteria (such as lactobacilli) can reduce the risk of chronic trichomonads or coccidia infection.

3.) Quails and pheasants

Quails and pheasants, too, are constantly exposed to intestinal disorders in breeding (breeding and laying) which can cause chronic diseases. This can cause poor growth, reduced egg production and fragile eggs. As we know, Ac-i-prim® with “lactobacillus acidophilus” supports digestion. Therefore, a biological contribution can aid with these disorders. It’s particularly important for quails and pheasants to be given Ac-i-prim® from day one, for at least 14 days. If necessary, substantially longer periods are also safe. Since Ac-i-prim® with “lactobacillus acidophilus” is not an antibiotic, there are no waiting periods with regard to consuming eggs and slaughter poultry.

Using Ac-i-prim®:

Ac-i-prim® is ideally added to food. In this case an option is to use the well-known “Fru-tin-fluid®” by re-scha® as a binding agent. This ensures none of the valuable substance is lost and even provides the lactobacilli with additional food to grow.

Adding it to water is only advisable if the animals drink the water within 2 – 3 hours. Several studies have shown that the longer Ac-i-prim® remains in water, the more lactobacilli die.

Another option it is to simply dust the food with Ac-i-prim®. Although some of the bacteria substance will be lost, there is often no other option. Ac-i-prim® cannot be overdosed, as excess bacteria is simply excreted. Lactobacilli further stop growing on their own if the pH level in the intestines is below a certain level.

To prepare animals for breeding, give Ac-i-prim® for at least 14 days. To improve egg quality, Ac-i-prim® can also be given throughout the laying period.

Give Ac-i-prim® to young animals from the 1st day of life, for a minimum of 14 days. But it can safely be given longer.

Ac-i-prim® dosage:

Ac-i-prim® should preferably be added to the entire day’s food.

The dose is approx. 3g/kg feed (=1 slightly heaping macroscoop) depending on the age and size of the animal.

The packages include measuring spoons for dosing.

Macro measuring spoon in the 100 g Ac-i-prim® can, slightly heaping (= 3.0g) for approx. 30 birds, flying pigeons, quails and pheasants per day.

Micro measuring spoon in the 40 g Ac-i-prim® container, slightly heaping (= 0.3g) for approx. 3-5 birds, flying pigeons, quails and pheasants per day. Macro measuring spoon in the 40 g Ac-i-prim® container, slightly heaping (= 3.0g) for approx. 30 birds, flying pigeons, quails and pheasants per day.

Micro measuring spoon in the 18 g Ac-i-prim® container, slightly heaping (= 0.3g) for approx. 3-5 birds, flying pigeons, quails and pheasants per day.

Storing Ac-i-prim®:

Re-scha® should be stored in freezer conditions, at least minus 18° Celsius. In these conditions the lactobacilli can remain viable for years. And of course the Ac-i-prim® product is also stored in these freezer conditions at re-scha® before it is shipped. Do not exceed four months of temporary refrigerated storage (approx. 6°C-8°C) or one month at room temperature (approx. 18°C-22°C). Please also note the product label.

This product information is intended as a guide for the correct use of the Ac-i-prim® product. Re scha® will gladly provide detailed information about specific uses.
